ACHPER Victoria is committed to helping equip, support and enable Health and Physical Education teachers at all levels to maximise student outcomes in physical and sport education, health education and outdoor education.
In addition to providing professional learning programs and events to help teachers teach at the top of their game, a lot of the other work we do is project based. We’d like to take this opportunity to fill you in on some of the fantastic projects we’ve been involved in over the past few months.
Supporting Sport and Recreation in Victorian Schools Program
Building community links and competency in quality Health and Physical Education (HPE) using a themed based approach to teaching sport is vital to student success and long term engagement in sport and active recreation.
In 2016, ACHPER Victoria received funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria as part of the ‘Supporting Victorian Sport and Recreation’ (SRV) program to encourage children in Victorian primary schools to be more active at school and within the community by exposing them to a greater range of activities.
Click here to learn more about the work we’re doing to connect the education and sport sectors by providing frameworks to show how they can work together to promote and encourage more children to participate in sport and physical activity at school and within their local community.
Physical Literacy Project
ACHPER is working with Sport Australia to develop a suite of resources to support the implementation of Physical Literacy in Australian schools. These resources, aimed at teachers and school leaders will build upon the previously created Physical Literacy Definition and draft Standard to further embed the concept of physical literacy into whole of school teaching and practice.
The work with Sport Australia supports the organisation’s new direction and commitment to building the world’s most active nation, known for its integrity, sporting success and world leading sports industry. With physical literacy creating the foundation for lifelong movement, Sport Australia wants to see all Australians developing the skills, confidence and motivation to move for life. Learn more here.
Strengthening LGBTI Inclusion in School Physical Education and Sport
ACHPER Victoria has been funded through Sport and Recreation Victoria to create a learning module for pre- and in-service teachers, focusing on increasing awareness and strategies to improve inclusion of LGBTI students in HPE, Sport and Physical Activity in schools.
Research into this area shows LGBTI identifying students experience a high level of anxiety and stress in PE and sport environments as a result of homophobic bullying, and the gendered nature of sport is a key issue influencing their opportunities to participate.
The project will involve collaborating with academics, practicing teachers and groups such as Proud2Play, to develop an evidence-based module which informs teachers about the issues LGBTI students face and promote inclusive practices to help provide more opportunities for positive experiences in school HPE, sport and physical activity.
Tertiary Presentations
Throughout October, members of the Professional Learning team will be visiting pre-service teachers at various universities, sharing information about who we are and how we can help practicing HPE teachers.
The sessions will focus on introducing student teachers to HPE advocacy and support, professional learning, consulting and resources we provide and why it is important to be aware of us, and become members. If you’d like us to visit your university, please get in touch!
Trial Exam and SAC development
Many of our VCE teachers are aware of our VCE Trial Exams and SACs, but not many realise what goes on behind the scenes to produce them! All VCE Trial Exams were released in August, with nearly 50 teachers collaborating to write, review and edit them over a 6 month period. Now the exams are out, preparations begin in the office to start the 2019 cycle.
At the moment, a similar sized team is working on developing the 2019 SACS, with the first drafts being reviewed. If all goes to plan, we are hoping to have these ready for release around the end of November. Stay tuned for more information and if you are interested in being involved in writing or reviewing teams in 2019, please contact Adriana Hlede (Professional Learning Coordinator) via email.
