We take a moment to chat to our one of our newest ACHPER Victoria Board Members, Principal Mr. Tony Goodwin:
What experiences/expertise do you bring to the ACHPER Victoria board?In over 35 years in education, I have taught from Foundation through to year 12. My main teaching methods have been Physical Education, Health, Outdoor Education and Sport. I am currently a Principal of an F-12 college so I have a very good understanding of Primary and Secondary education. More importantly, Victoria is the ‘Education State’ and I have a very good understanding of our education system, how it operates, the new initiatives and what are the enablers and the barriers to delivering great education.
ACHPER is an organisation advocating for teachers in the HPE learning area. It is actively trying to provide resources, professional development and a ‘one stop shop’ to assist teachers to provide a better learning environment and better learning outcomes for all students. Given the ever-changing climate of modern education an organisation like ACHPER provides a conduit for teachers between this climate and the modern classroom. The more who become part of the ACHPER organisation, the stronger and more relevant the organisation becomes.
When it comes down to it, everything which comes across my desk must consider one thing and one thing only – ‘What is best for the student.’ I thrive on this and continually remind all at my college. In a system which has generation ‘Z’ and now generation ‘Alpha’ who are very different to what has gone before them, education has to keep emerging and improving if we are to engage and help them to grow. Our college wide house program thrives on non-traditional sporting activities determined by and driven by students.
We thank Tony for taking the time to speak with us and look forward to working together to represent teachers and other professionals working in health, physical education and sport and recreation areas of study in Victoria.
