New ACHPER Victoria annual partnership announcement: Transport Accident Commission (TAC)

ACHPER Victoria is proud to work alongside and be supported by organisations and companies committed to improving societal health outcomes through the promotion and support of high quality health and physical education. We are excited to announce two new annual partners; Victoria University (VU) and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).

The TAC is renowned for its groundbreaking road safety campaigns. Together with other road safety agencies, the TAC developed the ‘Towards Zero’ strategy to create a future where no lives are lost on our roads and every journey is a safe one. To achieve this vision, the community needs to understand how we can make this goal a reality. In line with this thinking, the TAC has created the world-first Road to Zero Education Complex at the Melbourne Museum.

Introducing Road to Zero

The Road to Zero Education Complex was developed by TAC in partnership with Melbourne Museum and with education experts to ensure its content aligns with Victoria’s curriculum, in particular Year 9 and 10 Health and PE and Science.

Students are encouraged to get hands-on in the Road to Zero Experience.  With floor-to-ceiling projections and interactive activities, including a simulated elevator drop demonstrating crash forces, students can also take a virtual road trip into the future using VR headsets and also design their own road system.

There are two education programs designed specifically to address the Year 9/10 curriculum. ‘Getting the Message’ is a Health and PE program where students use a range of information sources to research and reflect on road safety behaviours of 14-17 year old’s. The students apply their findings to create a brief video campaign reinforcing positive road usage among their target audience.

There is also an education program for Years 9/10 Science.

Pre- and post-visit lesson plans and worksheets are available on the Road to Zero website for teachers to easily download and use.

Bookings for school group excursions for 2019 will open from 1 December, 2018. For more information or to register interest in booking an excursion, go to roadtozero.vic.gov.au or call (03) 8341 7150.

ACHPER Victoria would like to thank the TAC for its support to help us facilitate excellent health and physical education outcomes and promote lifelong learning.
