In Focus: Mark Corrie – 2017 ACHPER Victoria Honour Award recipient

We take a moment to chat to 2017’s ACHPER Victoria Honour Award recipient, Mark Corrie. An education leader with over 24 years’ experience in independent Victorian schools, Mark has a strong track record of planning and implementing successful academic, co-curricular, pastoral and staff development programs. Committed to ongoing professional development with proven leadership skills in an educational setting, Mark is a team player who is dedicated to improving student and organisation outcomes and experiences.

What professional growth have you experience through your engagement with ACHPER Victoria?

“Initially as a beginning teacher, ACHPER’s help was invaluable. David Smythe and Peter Wright ran PDs on VCE PE that really helped in both content delivery and teaching strategies. Now that ACHPER has given me the opportunity to present I find that this fine tune’s my thoughts on content delivery for VCE. I always learn from the participants as well, so I would encourage people to consider presenting for ACHPER.”

Why would you recommend others become engaged with ACHPER Victoria?

“I’m a tad old fashioned! I believe that ACHPER exists for its members, it is our professional body and as such we should all support it. ACHPER is a great organisation and with engagement from its members will continue to grow and support our needs.”

One short piece of advice, tip or strategy you’d be lost without:

“In VCE PE don’t over teach. Let your students experience the theory through engaging in practical activities to reinforce the theory. If you don’t have time to do pracs are you delivery too much content that may be outside the scope of the study design.”

We look forward to announcing our 2018 Honour Award recipient at our AGM and Awards night on 1 May, 2019.
