Celebrating our new and re-elected ACHPER Victoria Board Members following our 34th AGM

ACHPER Victoria’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) was a little different this year… Usually undertaken on the night of our annual awards ceremony, our 34th AGM was held via webinar on the 23rd June. It was a great opportunity for members take part in actively shaping our wonderful association.

It was also great to ‘see’ everyone and announce the appointment of three Board Director positions.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to new and re-elected Board Members, all of whom were voted in and elected by our members. Well done to new Board members Dr Helen Brown and Joanne Ritson, and re-elected Professor Anthony Watt.

Additionally, Peter Wright was re-elected by our members as President, with Kate Simpson announced as ACHPER Victoria’s new Vice President.

Meet our newest Board Directors

Dr Helen Brown:
Helen has been involved with ACHPER for over 30 years, as a teacher (secondary and tertiary), employee (ACHPER / PASE) and researcher (in child physical activity promotion). With extensive experience and expertise in the secondary and tertiary settings (in Sport, Physical Education and Health Promotion), Helen has held a variety of leadership and committee roles which have enabled her to develop skills in program planning, budgeting, professional development and resource development. A ‘big picture’ thinker, Helen is able to ascertain organisational needs now and in the future. She holds a PhD in health promotion (focusing on youth health behaviour change) and has vast experience in developing and implementing interventions to support teachers to encourage and motivate children to be physically active.

Joanne Ritson:
A practicing primary school PE teacher and sports coordinator, Joanne considers herself to be “..ever-evolving as a learner and continually seeking learning opportunities to further engage, assess and increase student opportunities.” Her primary reason to seeking nomination for the ACHPER Victoria board is to not only understand the ‘bigger picture role’ of ACHPER as a business that is beyond her school role (governance, finance liaison with stakeholders), but to look for opportunities of how she can contribute to support the evolution of high quality PE and Health Education programs in and outside of schools.

Professor Anthony Watt, PhD:
Re-elected by our members to the Board this year, Anthony has been associated with ACHPER as a physical education teacher and then as an academic across a period beginning in 1990. In his role as the Director of Learning and Teaching in the College of Arts and Education, he oversees and supports the training and graduation of approximately 100 physical education teachers, 60 health teachers, and 20 outdoor education teachers each year. Anthony provides valuable insight into how we can continue to best prepare new HPE teachers to best serve the community in ways that are reflective of the values and goals of ACHPER.

Meet our President and Vice-President

Peter Wright, FACHPER (President):
Former school principal and current School Sport Victoria Board member, Peter Wright has been an active member and advocate of ACHPER and the HPE community for many years. He commenced his career as a physical education teacher and retired after 8 years as Principal of Koonung Secondary College.

Kate Simpson (Vice-President):
Kate has been a member of Life Saving Victoria’s executive management team for over seven years where she is currently General Manger – Education & Sport. Kate possesses strong organisational leadership skills and highly values the continuation of personal and professional development.

Thank you Amanda Mooney!

The Board and the members of ACHPER Victoria wish to thank Associate Professor Amanda Mooney for her dedication and passion whilst serving on the Board for the past 8 years. Amanda also held the roles of Vice President of the Board and the Chair of the Tertiary Education and Research Portfolio. Amanda has been incredibly generous with her time and commitment to ACHPER over the years. Her significant contribution was formally recognised in 2019 when Amanda was awarded an ACHPER Fellowship for her service to ACHPER and the profession. Thank you Amanda and we wish you all the best!
