Roll Up: Getting more young people active through bowls
While students may not be able to get out on the green right now, Bowls Victoria have come up with some indoor activities to assist with your remote learning program. These indoor alternatives are easy to set up, don’t require any specialist equipment, and will engage all students.
Indoor bowls activities can all be created in the home using things around the house. Don’t have actual bowls? That’s OK!
These activities can be played with any other type of ball, a tennis ball is ideal, or try a rolled up sock! These modified bowls activities form part of a suite of resources available for teachers as part of BV’s Teacher Ambassador Program.

Bowls Victoria runs a number of youth programs specifically designed to be fun, inclusive and accessible. The great thing about bowls is that it does not discriminate against physical ability or gender – anyone can play!
Bowls is an excellent sport to run in a school environment due to its inclusiveness. It’s also a non-contact and low impact sport suitable for all ages and abilities. Bowls Victoria school programs develop fundamental motor skills and game sense knowledge, together with offering playing opportunities with other schools around Victoria.
Other programs like Roll Up and Junior League have been very well received and are a great way for teachers and students to get involved in their community with their local bowls club.
What’s Roll Up?
Roll Up is a bowls program that’s been designed in a way that allows absolutely anyone under the age of 18 to play the sport. Roll Up Hub Clubs have been set up across Victoria and provide a venue where juniors can learn the sport, develop playing skills and game knowledge and socialise with other kids of a similar age. The program is structured in 4-6 week blocks, with one session per week.
Join Junior League
Junior League is a Sunday morning inter-club competition that runs across the Melbourne Metropolitan region for Bowls Victoria affiliated junior bowlers under 18 years of age. Participants play at the one location each week, with 5 rounds played, plus and additional two weeks of finals.
Become a Teacher Ambassador
The Bowls Victoria Teacher Ambassador Program aims to resource, support and recognise teachers who promote bowls within their school and local community. The program has been developed to recruit passionate teachers to promote the sport of bowls. It enables teachers to implement and run bowls programs for their students and encourage them to participate in their school sport associations (SSA’s) bowls competitions.
Many bowls clubs welcome partnerships with schools and allow students to use their facilities for practice sessions, to run school bowls competitions or to borrow equipment. Teachers enrolled in the program receive special offers and discounts from BV on coaching courses, merchandise and more.
With a strong focus on fun and creating a welcoming and youth-friendly atmosphere, why not give bowls a go!
