Talk Revolution: strengths-based HPE video resources

I grew up in a family of addicts and violence, lost my brother to suicide at 19, experienced sexual abuse and battled with an eating disorder. No-one talked to me about any of it and as a result, I made bad choices. With my own kids, I vowed to do things differently.

I wholeheartedly believe that by having open, honest, sometimes challenging conversations around topics that many parents sometimes gloss over, goes some way to making my kids the empathetic, emotionally intelligent, strong, self assured, empowered teenagers they are today

Elsewhere it seems the responsibility for having these conversations is falling to schools and HPE teachers, so, with a team of passionate and phenomenal HPE teachers, Janice Atkin and I unpacked the HPE Curricula and developed a series of eight strength-based HPE resources, called Talk Revolution, that have really turned the way teachers deliver this content on its head.

The video based programs cover about 85% of the Health based content of the HPE curriculum for Years 5-10. The resources include:

  • Alcohol
  • Drugs
  • Eating Disorders
  • Gender-based Violence
  • Periods
  • Sex
  • Sexuality
  • Suicide and Self Harm

The videos are delivered by kids to make it more engaging, focusing on proximal peers giving advice. This has been found to be a more effective way of delivering health messages rather than the usual perception that teachers are ‘…just another adult telling them what not to do!’ The activities and lesson plans have been designed specifically to introduce, extend and then finally expand on key issues for deeper and richer understanding.”

Talk Revolution would like to offer FREE access to two programs of their choice until the end of the 2020 School year (conditions apply) to the first 100 schools that make contact by 30 September. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in, email tasha@talkrevolution.com.au today!
