Road to Zero – bringing health promotion to life in VCE HHD
This article is contributed by our partners, TAC’s Road to Zero.
Melbourne Museum has been home to Transport Accident Commission (TAC)’s Road to Zero since October 2018. The offering provides a digitally interactive and engaging way to deliver a number of curriculum aspects – and of course we are most excited about their new offering for VCE Units 3 and 4 Health and Human Development (HHD) students.
The Road to Zero exhibition (FREE to access) now offers a new program and links to the HHD study design, specifically addressing:
- Unit 3, Area of Study 2 – Promoting health and wellbeing
- Unit 4, Area of Study 2 – Health and the Sustainable Development Goals
It encourages students to engage in the content of the HHD course with the added benefit of having young people consider their behaviour and attitude towards road safety, with the aim to have zero deaths on our roads.
Students are encouraged to apply their understanding of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and the Sustainable Development Goals to the critical issue of road safety. They do this by downloading an app and completing three modules as they interact with a range of hands-on experiences in the exhibition.
Students have the opportunity to demonstrate understanding and practice applying information relating to health promotion as they move through the exhibition by responding to short answer questions. When they submit answers, they are provided with model answers and given an opportunity to adjust their responses, leading to immediate feedback. They also receive an email copy of their work to use as revision notes.
Consisting of three modules, the app provides students the opportunity to revise their key knowledge and apply skills in preparation for exams and other assessment tasks. These modules cover:
- Module 1: Action Areas Explore Victoria’s road safety health promotion strategy, and then apply the action areas of the Ottawa Charter
- Module 2: Health Promotion Strategies Consider how the Road to Zero experience reflects the health promotion strategies that underpin the Ottawa Charter.
- Module 3: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Explore how the Road to Zero experience is working towards achieving SDG 3 key feature ‘halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents.’
How do we get out students involved?
The following flexible learning options mean teachers and students can tailor their use of the exhibition to suit their needs, all free of charge!
- Revision session: Students can attend a free revision session during the 2021 September school holidays (23 and 27 September). Bookings are essential as spaces are limited. Send your students to the website to book.
- Individual: Students can visit Road to Zero during museum opening hours. Allow 60 minutes to complete the experience on your own. No booking is required.
