Team in Focus: Kerrie Borrie – ACHPER Victoria Customer Support and Office Manager
After a phenomenal 28 years with ACHPER Victoria, our beloved Kerrie Borrie is retiring in early July 2022. A critical member of our team, Kerrie’s role as Customer Support and Office Manager has been to keep everything running smoothly, from answering phones and emails from our HPE teaching community and members, to managing our extensive CRM, to website maintenance, to setting up and organising our events; basically, everything in front and behind the scenes to seamlessly keep our organisation running and on track.
Everything Kerrie undertakes is completed with grace, immaculate and thoughtful attention to detail, always accompanied by a cheeky smile or a joke (or both!). Kerrie has been the glue keeping us all together, and while we can’t quite comprehend the news she’s leaving us, we can confirm Kerrie certainly has earned a break (lol).
Very much a matriarch of the ACHPER Victoria family, we sat down to ask her a few questions about her time with the organisation and are pleased to share her stories with you in our latest Team in Focus. Read on below!
Funny work-related story
There have been so many, but I would prefer to embarrass myself. I have always been an early riser, many times, getting ready for work in the dark. So, one day, I was our event person for a workshop, set up tables and folders, registered over 100 people and double-checked catering tables and introduced the speakers to the delegates. I finally had the time to visit the restroom, this was when I discovered I was wearing my trousers inside out and not one person had been game to tell me. Not the slightest bit obvious with elephant ears where pockets should have been and tags all visible. I laughed at odd times quite a bit this day.
What element of your role do you find most rewarding?
This is an easy one. I love being able to solve problems and make someone’s day better. How great to put someone’s mind at rest or reduce the drama in their life by just listening and wanting to help?
What are your goals for 2022? (professional or otherwise)
Gosh, I don’t want to cry too much at my farewell LOL I want to spend time with my gorgeous grand babies. I want to get some exercise on a whim during the day. I want to be spontaneous.
What professional growth have you experienced during your time with ACHPER Victoria?
Over 28 years ago I was not, believe it or not, computer literate. I started learning IT on a computer which weighed about 40kg and had a screen the size of a small tissue box. I hand wrote envelopes for whole school mailouts and licked the stamps to post them. There was no internet, but we did eventually get a fax machine. I learned how to create and maintain a website. I completed a business administration course and learned some almost unheard-of little quirks and tricks in excel etc. But with all of this, the professional growth I cherish most has been more to do with the people I have worked with. They have allowed me to grow and learn so many things along this journey, so I am thankful for them all.
What is one piece of advice you would be lost without?
Only one? Over 28 years I have collected a few! One, be yourself. Sometimes you will rub someone up the wrong way just being who you are. Accept this will happen and try to put yourself in their shoes but don’t be too hard on yourself. Two, don’t be afraid to give it a go. You won’t always get it right, excel or enjoy the experience but you may! Three, and possibly the easiest, keep your sense of humour and don’t take yourself too seriously 😊
Kez, we love you and wish you all the very best on the next leg of the journey.
