Supporting SSAs through the ‘Together More Active’ project

ACHPER Victoria, with the support of Vicsport, has been collaborating with Victorian State Sporting Associations (SSAs) through the Together More Active project, an initiative aimed at boosting participation in sport and active recreation across Victoria.

Our focus has been on providing strategic support tailored to the specific needs of each SSA we’ve worked with, including professional learning opportunities, curriculum alignment, practical activations, and engagement strategies just to name a few.

Working with key SSAs

Throughout the project, while connecting schools with SSAs across the Victorian sport sector, we have focused our support on four key SSAs, tailoring our assistance to meet their specific needs. The SSAs we’ve worked closely with are Softball Victoria, Cricket Victoria, Tenpin Bowling Australia, and Rugby Victoria, who continue to receive targeted, consistent support to help them achieve their goals.

A major focus has been on delivering high-quality, coach education, empowering their workforce to deliver engaging sport sessions for young people in schools and communities. In response to feedback from both SSAs and teachers, we are developing a professional learning program that includes eLearning modules, face-to-face workshops, and mentoring to help refine and enhance the quality of coaching delivered to young people across the state.

Case study: collaborating with Cricket Victoria

An example of our collaboration through the Together More Active project is with Cricket Victoria, where we’ve supported the creation and delivery of the Mascot Challenge Teacher PD Tour.

In Term 3, Cricket Victoria Cricket Managers engaged with 18 schools, delivering student-facing cricket clinics to approximately 800 students across Victoria. Alongside this, ACHPER Victoria supported the Cricket Managers in delivering teacher-focused professional learning sessions on best practice engagement and how to embed the Mascot Challenge into classrooms and everyday teaching practices. Approximately 150 primary school teachers, including 25 PE teachers, participated in these professional development sessions.

The success of this project has led to inviting over 500 students and their teachers to participate in the largest Mascot Challenge, as well as cheer on the Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers in the WBBL series on 8 November. This is a great example of how sport can inspire, connect, and engage young people, creating lasting enthusiasm and opportunities for lifelong participation.

Join the ACHPER Connect Community Directory

In addition to supporting SSA’s we have developed the ACHPER Connect Community Directory to help schools connect with SSAs and their programs. It provides links to contacts, resources, and events from the SSAs we work with.
