At Rosebud Secondary College, all health and wellbeing curriculum and practices are founded on the four pillars of good health and wellbeing, BASE – Be. Active. Sleep. Eat.

This proactive approach encourages students to practise mindfulness and take part in a range of extracurricular activities known as BASE Squads.

Launched in 2022 with the support of Active Schools’ EC boost funding, BASE Squads were created to increase student health and wellbeing through participation in physical activity, build social connections and strengthen links with the broader community.

The program commenced with five squads – running, swimming, basketball, “Girls Can” (female gym sessions) and “Salty Squad” (snorkelling and surfing). 200 students were involved in the program.

Since then, BASE Squads have grown from strength to strength. Between 2023 and 2025, the program has expanded to 18 different squads,

Student participation is celebrated through a bonus points system, with points redeemable for vouchers, stickers, Jibbitz, and exclusive squad polo tops that can be worn with the Sports uniform on any day of the week, thus further enabling students to be active during breaks. Whether before school, during long break, or after school, students are encouraged to get involved, stay active, and build lasting friendships.

Sarah More, BASE Squad’s coordinator has reported that a remarkable 400 students have signed up for one or more squads in 2025, doubling participation from the previous year.
