Bernie Holland’s presentation at ACHPER International Conference 2019

With over 50 years engaging with national and international health and physical education teachers, sport educators and coaches, outdoor educators and associated health practitioners, the ACHPER International Conference held annually in Canberra, is recognised for sharing the importance of active and healthy living through ACHPER primary focus areas – health and physical education and recreation.

ACHPER Victoria Professional Learning Manager, Bernie Holland, was invited to present on a panel at this year’s conference entitled, “Physical Literacy for Physical Education Symposium” alongside fellow health and physical education leaders Associate Professor Shane Pill, Rick Baldock, Katie Liebelt, Richard Telford AM and Pierre Comis.

On the panel, Bernie discussed ACHPER Victoria’s role in the development of Sport Australia’s Physical Literacy School Framework – a body of work developed by ACHPER Victoria with funding received from Sport Australia in 2018.

A synopsis of Bernie’s discussion can be found here.

Slide 1: Reinforces the important distinction between Physical Education and Physical Literacy – they are not interchangeable terms. Our role as physical educator’s is however vital to this equation

Slide 2: Outlines the 8 key areas of the framework. Bernie highlighted the central role of a quality HPE Program within this framework and reinforced the importance of working towards the development of individuals and communities that demonstrates all or some of these components – “some is good, more is better.”

Slide 3: Bernie also spoke about the importance of being informed consumers and reinforced that with many programs and interventions directed towards the school it is vital for the HPE teacher to understand what components of physical literacy each program or intervention addresses.
