The HOPE Lecture: celebrating the first Australian university course in physical education

Education often feels like a balancing act – with competing demands and conflicting purposes, it can be difficult for educators to stay focused on what truly matters. Has the heart of teaching and learning been lost in the noise?

Professor John Quay believes there’s hope, through the good work of teachers.

In this inaugural professorial lecture, Professor Quay will suggest a different way of considering how teaching and learning work, one that is always available, but mostly hidden beneath other concerns.

Through a subtle realignment of the ways teaching and learning fit together, Professor Quay will argue we can move away from rigid top-down approaches to a more integrated vision of education.

About Professor Quay (FACHPER)

John Quay is a Professor in the Faculty of Education, University of Melbourne. His life in teaching and research started in secondary schools with physical education, outdoor education and sport. His research builds from this experience and draws on educational philosophies in attempting to better understand the practices of education, with the aim of supporting teachers, and through teachers, all involved.

Professor Quay was awarded an ACHPER Fellowship Award in 2018 for his significant contribution to building practice excellence in physical education.

Renaming the lecture series

This lecture series was previously named after Fritz Duras. Recent evidence has been brought to the attention of The University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Education regarding Fritz Duras’s membership of the Eugenics Society of Victoria.

Following discussions with the Duras family, the Faculty of Education have renamed its annual lecture to become “The HOPE Lecture: celebrating the first Australian university course in physical education”. HOPE is an acronym for Health, Outdoor and Physical Education; and HOPE also carries optimism regarding possible futures of education.

ACHPER Victoria supports The University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Education in the renaming of their annual lecture.
