Engaging Every Student in Primary PE – Community of Practice

Date & Time:

May 20, 2026 @ 4:00 pm - August 26, 2026 @ 5:00 pm
Join our Community of Practice (CoP) led by experienced Active Educators Ben Lepore and Cayden Woods, designed for primary PE teachers who want to engage every student—not just the confident or capable ones. Across six interactive online sessions, you’ll explore what engagement really looks like in PE and how to design lessons that maximise participation, decision-making and learning through game-based approaches.

This six-session online CoP is built around a discussion-driven, teacher-led model, where learning comes from both practical input and shared experience.

Members: $165 | Non-members: $215 | Students: $77

Each session follows a consistent structure:

  • 20–30 minute provocation (ideas + practical strategies)
  • Breakout discussions with guided questions
  • Whole group share-back
  • Facilitated synthesis of key ideas
  • Reflection and action commitment

Every session ends with a clear focus: “What will I try in my next lesson?”

Session Schedule & Focus Areas

  • 20 May – What Does Engagement Actually Look Like in PE? – Unpack the difference between engagement, compliance and “fun,” and build a shared understanding of what meaningful engagement looks like in PE.
  • 3 June – Why Games Work (and Why Drills Often Don’t) – Explore the shift from drills to game-based learning, focusing on decision-making, student ownership and reducing downtime.
  • 17 June – Small-Sided Thinking: Maximising Participation – Use small-sided games and simple constraints to increase touches, decisions and active involvement for every student.
  • 29 July – Differentiation Without the Overwhelm – Learn how to include all students through “same game, different challenge” using rules, space and roles
  • 12 August – Assessing What Actually Matters in Games – Move beyond skill checklists to assess decision-making, teamwork and effort in simple, manageable ways.
  • 26 August – From Ideas to Practice: What’s Sticking? – Reflect on what’s worked, share successes and challenges, and build a plan to sustain changes beyond the CoP.
